Patrick Stewart knows from personal experience how helpful medical marijuana can be.
The “X-Men” star spoke out in support of an Oxford University research experiment into the medical benefits of marijuana in treating pain, cancer and inflammatory diseases.
“Two years ago, in Los Angeles, I was examined by a doctor and given a note which gave me legal permission to purchase, from a registered outlet, cannabis-based products, which I was advised might help the ortho-arthritis in both my hands,” Stewart, 76, said in a statement to NME.
Now, the British actor uses an ointment at night, and has also tried cannabis spray and edibles.

“I can make fists,” he said, “which was not the case before I began this treatment.”
The Oxford University study, funded up to about $16 million by Oxford Cannabinoid Technologies, aims to “identify new medical therapies through research into the molecular, cellular and systems mechanisms of cannabinoids,” according to the school.
“This is an important step forward for Britain in a field of research that has for too long been held back by prejudice, fear and ignorance,” Stewart said.
“I believe this program of research might result in benefits for people like myself as well as millions of others.”
